A former Mayor of Limerick believes the decision made by the family of a murder victim to leave the country was "inevitable".

A former Mayor of Limerick believes the decision made by the family of a murder victim to leave the country was "inevitable".

Roy Collins was shot dead in Limerick three years ago, and yesterday it emerged his parents and family have begun a new life as part of the State's Witness Relocation Programme.

They had been under armed Garda protection since Roy's death.

John Gilligan, a former Limerick mayor and close friend of the Collins family, has said events since the killing had taken a terrible toll.
