Coveney calls for clampdown on mackerel fishing

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has called on the EU to take further, stronger action against Iceland and the Faroe islands for their unsustainable fishing of mackerel.

In Brussels today Simon Coveney called for the EU to fast track the adoption of effective trade sanctions against the two countries.

The minister received strong support from the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, and other ministers at the meeting.

Minister Coveney said he found it difficult to accept that the EU could move ahead in good faith in opening a fisheries chapter in accession negotiations with Iceland while this issue remains unresolved.
