Govt to update UN Human Rights Council on progress

The Government will again appear before the United Nations' Human Rights Council today.

Today's address is a follow-up to October's Universal Periodic Review, which saw Justice Minister Alan Shatter agree to consider 50 recommendations on improving the country's human rights record.

The Government will today update the Council on Ireland's progress in meeting those recommendations.

The Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) will also address the Council.

"The Irish Human Rights Commission will today be welcoming the commitments made by the Government," said IHRC acting chief executive Des Hogan.

"But we will be calling on the Government to accelerate its protection programmes concerning prisoners, women, people with disabilities, Travellers and other minority groups like that."
