Gardaí have arrested a man after an improvised explosive device went off in Cork city overnight.

An Army bomb disposal officer has been taken to hospital following the explosion in Ballyvolane at approximately 10pm last night.

Gardaí were alerted to a suspect device underneath a car which was parked in Mervue Lawn, Ballyvolane.

The area was sealed off and a number of houses were evacuated.

The Army bomb disposal team attended and during the examination of the car an Army officer was injured when trying to make it safe and brought to Cork University Hospital.

A man in his 30’s was arrested at the scene and is being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Mayfield Garda Station.

The residences were allowed to return home in the early hours of this morning and the car is due to be technically examined by Gardaí.
