Emigration not always the worst thing, says Ombudsman

Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly has today said that emigration is not always the worst option for young people.

She said that emigration, whilst difficult for families, can be a practical measure.

"I suppose it's wise in a way, if they are anticipating future careers to look outside of Ireland," she said.

"I mean, they're only being practical in that sense.

"But I think it is a pity that so many of them will inevitably be forced to emigrate.

"Now I'm not saying that's always the worst thing, we are in a globalised society, and why not - Ireland's a tiny country.

"If I were 19 or 20 again it might be fantastic to be able to go off to the US or Australia."

She made the comments at the Young Social Innovators event in Dublin this morning, which is showcasing projects by school students around Ireland on issues such as mental health and the recession.

The Ombudsman also expressed concern that many students may be forced out of college because of high fees and the cost of living.
