128,000 have paid Household Charge

A total of 128,000 people have so far paid the new €100 Household Charge.

The deadline is the end of March, but people are being warned that if they want to pay the tax in instalments, they must register by this Wednesday.

Around 1.6 million householders are liable to pay the charge and risk having to pay a fine for late payments.

Chairperson of the Household Charge Project Board Jackie Maguire is warning that Facebook rumours that the charge is not enshrined in the Constitution is false.

"It is law that you have to pay the charge and that is also underscored by the Constitution of Ireland," he said.
