A 25-year-old man has died after being assaulted in Co Tipperary at the weekend.

James Tynan, from Johnstown in Co Kilkenny, died in hospital in Clonmel yesterday evening following the attack outside a Thurles nightclub.

Mr Tynan had been socialising in Hayes Hotel on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, after which he was assaulted at around 1.30am on nearby Liberty Square.

He was rushed to South Tipperary General Hospital where he died at around 7.30pm yesterday evening.

Mr Tynan was described as being a well-liked and unassuming young man and his family and local community are said to be in shock.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and questioned by gardaí in connection with the incident.
