Dublin bins set to remain uncollected today

Bins around Dublin could be left uncollected this morning if around 18,000 householders do not sign up to Greyhound Recycling & Recovery.

The firm issued warnings earlier this week that unless fees have been paid, bins would not be collected from today onwards.

Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Joe Costello said that this ultimatum is unfair as the service is still not up-to-scratch, with some black bags in the north inner city being left for lengthy periods without collection.

"Greyhound's collection system is clearly inadequate," he has said previously.

"This is causing particular problems in the inner city, where uncollected bin bags are being ripped open by dogs, scattering rubbish on the street."

The Labour Party Deputy said that if people are not satisfied with the service, there are other options.

"Greyhound do not have a monopoly, they have a very strong contract, in that it's right across the board with the Dublin local authorities," he said.

"But not everybody is using Greyhound, people can, and have the right (to) go to Oxigen and other service providers there if they so wish, and I've no doubt that a situation that will begin to arise if we continue along this line that Greyhound has begun."
