Reilly: Staff retirements a 'significant challenge' for HSE

Health Minister James Reilly has today warned that the departure of 2,200 health staff by the end of the month will pose "a significant challenge" for the HSE.

However the Minister said there are still enough staff remaining to ensure that targets are delivered and services are provided.

"While the numbers leaving are indeed significant and represent a significant challenge for the health system, we will still have in excess of 100,000 staff and we must focus our attention on how to make the most effective use of this most important resource," he told the Dáil.

"The priority must be how to reform how health services are delivered. This requires greater flexibilities in work practices and rosters, as well as maximising the use of redeployment so as to facilitate the best possible organisation of services."
