Two arrested after major oil laundering plant uncovered

An oil laundering plant that could produce 12 million litres of illegal fuel a year has been uncovered in Co Louth.

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service and gardaí made the discovery in Courtbane, Hackballscross yesterday evening.

Two men in their late 20s were arrested, one with a Dublin address and the other a home in the North.

The plant, which was found hidden behind a curtain in a 40ft trailer, could cost the Exchequer an estimated €6m a year.

Officers also uncovered a mobile laundering plant in a van, containing two tankers and 25,000 litres of product.

A substantial amount of toxic waste was also found at the site.
