More than 425,000 hours were clocked up by volunteers in Ireland last year, the group Volunteer Ireland has revealed.

More than 425,000 hours were clocked up by volunteers in Ireland last year, the group Volunteer Ireland has revealed.

That works out at a contribution to the value of €9.2m, using the average industrial wage.

Volunteer Ireland said more than 11,600 people registered across the country in 2011 - a 24% rise on figures for 2010.
