Private owners of domestic wells will not have to pay water charges.

The European Commission confirmed that the 200,000 farmers and rural dwellers who use their own wells for their water supply will not have to pay a future water tax.

Fianna Fáil Senator Brian O'Domhnaill said it had been feared that a European Directive would lead to the imposing of a flat-rate levy, or metered fee, on well owners, but that this has been averted.
