The latest person to be killed on the country's roads has been named locally as Austin Noonan, from Maynooth in Co. Kildare.

The 36-year-old died shortly before 10pm last night when he was knocked down by a car at Baybush in Straffan.

His death brings to six the number of people killed on the country's roads during the past five days.

Three of the victims were pedestrians.

The Road Safety Authority is advising people to be extra careful on the roads in the coming days as Met Eireann has issued a severe weather warning.

Winds gusting up to 140 kilometres per hour will batter the country today and tomorrow and is likely to lead to fallen debris or tree branches on some roads.
