Patricia Quinn ordered to repay €3m borrowed from Anglo

The wife of businessman Sean Quinn has been ordered to repay a €3m debt to the former Anglo Irish Bank.

Irish Bank Resolution Corporation has secured summary judgement against Patricia Quinn, who claimed she was under the undue influence of her husband when she signed up for the 2006 loan.

The bank says Sean and Patricia Quinn signed up to for a personal loan in December 2006 to decorate their new home near the Slieve Russell hotel in Co Cavan.

Patricia Quinn claims she never got the benefit of the money, that she was under the undue influence of her husband and that she did not understand what she was signing up to.

While she has been a director of more than 60 companies, she claims she had no day-to-day business dealings. She said her role for 36 years was as a homemaker, and not as a businesswoman.

In his ruling, Mr Justice Peter Kelly said even the most cursory of glances would have alerted "anyone literate" to the fact that this was some sort of borrowing transaction.

He added: "What could be more negligent than signing legal documents willy-nilly without giving any thought to their effect?"

IBRC challenged Patricia Quinn's credibility, but the judge said he was prepared to accept her evidence at face value.

However he found she had failed to raise any arguable defence to stave off the bank's right to recover the €3m loan.
