The HSE has given a commitment to hold a consultation process with any nursing homes that are being considered for closure.

The decision was taken after yesterday's agreement not to close Abbeyleix Nursing home.

The Community Hospital had been due to close on financial grounds, but a High Court challenge to its closure was yesterday settled to allow a 12-week consultation to take place.

Health Minister James Reilly today warned the Oireachtas Committee on Health that any unit with less than 50 beds will be under pressure to stay open.

HSE Chief Cathal Magee added that it will be a challenging year ahead but that in future a 12-week process will take place with stakeholders before any units are closed.
