Taoiseach mourns death of mother

Taoiseach Enda Kenny's mother has passed away at the age of 93.

Eithne Kenny died this morning in Co Mayo, surrounded by her family.

Originally from Co Donegal, Eithne married the late deputy Henry Kenny and had four children.

Speaking just months before her death, Eithne said she was so proud to live to see her son become Taoiseach.

Her funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Fine Gael parliamentary party chairman Charlie Flanagan this afternoon offered sympathy to the Taoiseach.

"On behalf of all members of the Fine Gael parliamentary party, I offer my deepest sympathy to the Taoiseach on this very sad day," he said.

"The loss of a loved one is always difficult but particularly so at this time of year. Mrs Eithne Kenny is survived by her four sons; John, Henry, Enda, and Ciarán and her daughter, Marie Hastings, who, I have no doubt, will miss her dearly.

"The thought and prayers of the entire parliamentary party are with them all during this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin TD also offered his condolences and those of his party to the Taoiseach and his family.

"My sympathy and that of my party is with the Taoiseach and his family at this sad time," he said.
