West and South bear brunt of overnight rain

Heavy rain overnight has left many roads flooded this morning with the West and South of the country worst affected.

Motorists are being advised to drive with extra care and reduce their speed.

Dan O'Neill of AA Roadwatch said: "Steering becomes unresponsive because of the rain, so ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually," he advised.

"In conditions like this, gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving."

he also said drivers should double the normal distance between their car and the one in front as stopping times are longer in wet weather.
