Noonan: EU will decide if Cardiff appropriate for job

The Government has said it will not be doing a u-turn on the nomination of senior Department of Finance official Kevin Cardiff to a post on the EU Court of Auditors.

A number of Irish MEP's, as well as Minister for State Sean Sherlock, have voiced concerns at the nomination following last week's revelation about a serious blunder at the department of finance, concerning the discovery of €3.6bn.

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said in Brussels today that it is now the role of the European Parliament Committee to decide if Mr Cardiff is appropriate.

No Irish MEP's are on the 29-person body which will be charged with interviewing the former Department of Finance chief for the role.
