The average price of a motor insurance policy in Ireland dropped from €567 to €549 since the beginning of 2011 - a 3% drop.

The latest survey by AA Irish Motor Insurance tracked 200 identical motor insurance risks, representative of the Irish motoring population, since the beginning of the year to produce the findings.

Miriam O'Neill from AA Ireland said that there are a number of reasons why insurance premiums have dropped.

"We’ve seen a drop in the number of car crimes: car thefts have dropped by 10% over the last year," she said.

"And of course there’s also the reduction in the number of road collisions taking place, so these factors are likely to affect it as well."
