Lonergan backs proposal to deduct fines from social-welfare payments

The former governor of Mountjoy Prison John Lonergan has said he would welcome new laws to enable the Government to take fines out of people's social welfare.

The thinking behind the proposal is that it would cut the number of people being sent to prison for not paying fines.
