Taoiseach's nominees to the Seanad criticise bondholder payments

Three of the Taoiseach's nominees to the Seanad have today criticised the Government's decision to repay unguaranteed bondholders at the former Anglo Irish Bank.

Senators Katherine Zappone, Fiach MacConghaill and Jillian Van Turnhout say the Government's call to pay out more than €700m was made with undue haste.

While the payment was due to be made at noon, they say there is no confirmation the cheque has been issued.

Senator Van Turnhout says before the money is paid, there should be a full public debate of the issues.

"It’s what the people have voted for," she said. "When we changed Government, the people expected change."
