An Englishman who "struck it lucky" when he stole a gun safe containing €17,000 worth of gold jewellery after breaking into a Co Wicklow house has been jailed for 18 months.

William Moorehouse, aged 24, later directed gardai to an isolated location near Brittas Bay where he had hidden a shotgun and a hunting gun that had also been in the safe.

He told gardaí that he had already sold the jewellery because he needed money for drugs and that he had "no use" for the guns which was why he had disposed of them.

Moorehouse - with an address of Churchview, Greenpark, Clondalkin - pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to burglary in Ashtown, Co Wicklow on October 16 of last year.

Judge Martin Nolan said he accepted that Moorehouse has since tried to deal with his addiction before he sentenced him to 18 months in prison, which he backdated to February when Moorehouse was remanded in custody.
