Latest poll indicates commanding lead for Gallagher

With just days to go until the Presidential election, it is looking increasingly likely that Seán Gallagher will become the next President of Ireland.

According to the latest opinion poll in this morning's Irish Times, the independent candidate has 40% support, some15 points ahead of his nearest rival Michael D Higgins on 25%.

Martin McGuinness is in third place on 15%.

David Norris is on 8%, closely followed by Gay Mitchell on 6%.

Mary Davis and Dana Rosemary Scallon are in joint last position on 3%.

Speaking on the campaign trial over the weekend however, Mr McGuinness said he is still confident he can win.

"The only poll that counts for all of us is on October 27," he said.

"I am delighted with how things are going on the ground.

"The reception I'm getting everywhere is fantastic."

All seven candidates will later todayl take part in an online debate hosted by Newstalk and Google, followed by the final televised debate on RTÉ tonight.

Meanwhiel voters living on the five islands off the coast of Donegal will go to the polls today to vote in the presidential election, three days ahead of the rest of the country.
