Journalist and filmmaker O'Shannon dies aged 83

Former RTÉ journalist and filmmaker Cathal O'Shannon has died, aged 83.

Former RTÉ journalist and filmmaker Cathal O'Shannon has died, aged 83.

An RAF airman and former Irish Times war correspondent, Mr O'Shannon was a journalist, documentary maker and presenter with RTÉ.

Among his many achievements were an iconic 1972 interview with boxer Muhammad Ali and documentaries, 'Even the Olives are Bleeding' (on the Spanish Civil War) and 'Hidden History: Ireland's Nazis'.

Born in 1928, O'Shannon grew up in Dublin, the son of Cathal O'Shannon Snr, a noted socialist and republican.

He was married to Patsy Dyke, who passed away in 2006.
