Rights conference to discuss UN review
The implications of a recent UN review on Ireland's human rights record will come under the spotlight today.
The Irish Human Rights Commission and the Law Society of Ireland are holding their ninth joint annual conference in Dublin later.
The focus of today's event will be the recent universal periodical review by the United Nations, which highlighted a number of areas that need to be addressed.
"The purpose of the conference today is really to discuss practical steps that need to be taken by Government to address the gaps in human rights protection that were identified by the UN Human Rights Council member states earlier this month," said Eamonn Mac Aodh, CEO of the Human Rights Commission.
"The recommendations will cover a number of areas where the situation effectively needs to be put right - and that includes the rights of travellers, the rights of women, the rights of people with disabilities and the human rights of people in prison and places of detention."
