A viable pipe bomb type device has been left at the entrance of a retired policewoman's home in Co. Down.

The PSNI said the community of Laurencetown area near Banbridge was severely disrupted yesterday, as people were forced to leave their homes and roads were closed until the device was made safe.

A spokesman said it was attempted murder, and it is extremely fortunate that no-one was killed or injured.
