A Dublin man has gone on trial accused of murdering a 26-year-old man who was shot 11 times in an apartment block in Clontarf.

Michael Taylor (aged 30) from Summerhill has pleaded not guilty to the killing of Paul Kelly at Winstonville Apartments on Charlemont Road on April 6, 2007.

The prosecution say gardaí found Paul Kelly slumped in the doorway of the foyer of Winstonville Apartments surrounded by spent gunshot shells.

They were alerted to the scene not long before midnight by a 999 call from a neighbour, Clifford Brennan, who has given evidence that he was in bed when he heard two bangs, followed by more rapid fire.

Another neighbour, Ray Duff, also heard what he thought was a car backfiring and a windscreen being broken.

From his front door he roared: 'What are you doing?' at two men in balaclavas before backing away when he realised that they were armed.

He told the jury he then heard screams and ran to the apartments to administer first aid but when he saw the man slumped and the dark blood from his upper body, he knew there was nothing he could do.
