30 for, six against, 11 abstentions: The numbers that see Norris into Áras race

Senator David Norris will contest the Presidential election, after tonight securing the support of Dublin City Council.

Thirty Councillors voted to support his candidacy, six opposed it and 11 councillors abstained from the vote.

It follows a rollercoaster day for the Senator, after Cork County Council rejected his candidacy shortly followed by a vote of support from Waterford City Council.

The endorsement of his candidacy by Dublin City Council follows a call from Labour Presidential candidate Michael D. Higgins to his party's councillors not to block Senator Norris.
