Discount giant opens first two Irish stores

Europe's biggest single price discount retailer - Poundland - has opened its first two stores in Ireland.

The new shops opened in Blanchardstown and Portlaoise today with the creation of 70 new jobs in total.

The brand will trade under the name 'Dealz'.

Along with a range of own brand products, Dealz will also stock products sourced from Irish producers such as Tayto, Barry's Tea and Brennans bread.

“We are extremely excited about the opening of our first two Irish stores," Poundland’s CEO Jim McCarthy said.

"We are confident that value savvy Irish consumers will love it," he added.

"We are also delighted to have the valued support of Irish suppliers by stocking locally sourced products such as milk, eggs, crisps and cakes. This helps sustain existing Irish jobs.”

Poundland, which has over 355 stores in the UK, announced its expansion into Republic of Ireland in August.
