Young carers 'in every community in Ireland'

There is a young carer in every community is Ireland, according to stakeholders at a meeting at a Dublin conference today.

They say enhanced collaboration between the Government, health service providers, the voluntary sector and people on the ground would make things better for young carers.

Carers under the age of 18 are not formally recognised by the State at present.

Executive director of Care Alliance Ireland Liam O'Sullivan said there is a growing appreciation of what young carers face because of increased media attention.

"We need to raise the awareness (of young carers) within our communities…to ensure no young person falls through the cracks," he said.
