Davis set for Áras run with four nominations

Presidential hopeful Mary Davis has secured enough local authority nominations to contest the election.

The head of Special Olympics Ireland has today received the support of Monaghan Co Council and South Tipperary Co Council.

It brings to four the number of councils that have voted to nominate her as an independent candidate for the vote on October 27.

Mrs Davis thanked the councils for her nominations saying she was "honoured" to have received their support and would work tirelessly over the coming six weeks.

She also urged a move away from the 'personality politics' that have dominated the early stages of the campaign.

“As this campaign progresses I believe that a real debate should begin about the type of Presidency our people need today, about the values that we wish to see reflected from Aras an Uachtaráin, and about the way in which the Presidency can work to repair Ireland’s reputation on the international stage," she said.

“This kind of healthy debate is what the country needs and the voters deserve."
