Cabinet to meet after summer recess

The Cabinet is meeting at Government Buildings today following the summer break.

Ministers held their last meeting on July 26 before breaking for a five-week recess - the shortest summer break for an Irish Government in years.

Today's meeting will mark the start of the autumn term, although the Dáil itself will not resume for another two weeks.

The Cabinet is expected to use this morning's gathering to review developments that occurred during the recess including the mounting market turmoil over fears the EU debt crisis is spreading.

The domestic mortgage debt problems also looks set to be on the agenda, given the figures released by the Central Bank yesterday showing a continued rise in arrears cases.

The Budget is also set to be discussed, with savings of at least €3.6bn to be achieved, while the legislative programme for the forthcoming new term may also feature in the discussions.
