Canadian student charged with Temple Bar assault on French medic
A 23-year-old Canadian student has appeared in court charged with assault causing harm to a French medic in Dublin's Temple Bar over the weekend.
Simon Mercier, who studies in Quebec, has been remanded in custody until Wednesday.
Simon Mercier is accused of assaulting 26-year-old French medic Guillane Osterstock in Temple Bar in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The locum doctor is currently being treated at Beaumont hospital where he sometimes works.
This evening in court his alleged attacker wore jeans, a white hooded top and glasses and sat with a French interpreter.
Judge Aingeal Ní Chonduin was told the 23-year-old Quebec student made no reply when charged at Pearse Street station.
She heard he has no permanent address here and no ties to the state and that gardaí will object if he applies for bail.
He has been remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Wednesday.
