Minute's silence for famine urged at sporting events
Sporting organisations are being asked to observe a minute's silence on Saturday, September 10 in memory of those who died in the Great Famine.
The call comes from the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan, who said that now, more than ever, we need to remember those who suffered loss during the famine.
September 10 marks this year's National Famine Commemoration, which will be held in Clones in Co Monaghan.
President Mary McAlesse will officiate at the ceremony.
