Two Fine Gael councillors from Roscommon have resigned from the party over the controversial closure of the A&E department at Roscommon County Hospital.

Two Fine Gael councillors from Roscommon have resigned from the party over the controversial closure of the A&E department at Roscommon County Hospital.

Dominic Connolly and Laurence Fallon made the move after the HSE confirmed the closure will come into place today, amid local and national protests.

The hospital's emergency department now becomes an 'urgent care unit', which is not designed to deal with medical emergencies.
