Burton moves to halt benefit fraud by prisoners

The Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has said her department is working with the Prison Service to further clamp down on benefit fraud.

According to the Irish Independent, nearly 2,000 people managed to claim benefit while in jail, or on the run, last year.

At the moment, the Prison Service provides three updates a year to the Department of Social Protection, containing the PPS numbers of everyone in the system.
