Van Rompuy: Ireland may burn senior bondholders
The President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy has not ruled out the burning of bondholders at Anglo Irish Bank and Irish Nationwide.
The Government announced this week it wants to save the taxpayer money by getting the bondholders of €3.7bn to take discounts.
Some concern has been expressed about the burden-sharing of senior bondholders, as it may make it difficult for AIB and Bank of Ireland to return to the markets.
But speaking at Government Buildings this afternoon after meeting the Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Mr Van Rompuy agreed Ireland could discuss burning bondholders with Europe.
