Handgun found close to scene of Santry shooting

Gardaí investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Santry last night have discovered a handgun close to the scene.

The gun will undergo a ballistics examination at the Technical Bureau in Garda Headquarters.

The man who was killed has been named as Eddie Flanagan - who was in his 40s and from Tallaght.

Gardaí in Dublin have arrested a 51-year-old man, who presented himself to gardaí at Ballymun earlier, in connection with the shooting.

A forensic technical examination of the scene is underway. The body of the dead man is expected to be removed from the scene shortly and a post mortem examination will take place later this evening.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the general area of The Green, Larch Hill, Santry, Dublin 9 between the hours of 7pm. and 11pm on June 15 to contact them at Santry garda station on 01 666 4000.

Speaking at the Garda College in Templemore today, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said efforts are being made to establish a motive for this latest killing.

"Well it's too early to say, it's less than 24 hours" he said.

"That's something that the investigation will be working on - to see who's involved and what the motive is; and we haven't yet established that."
