Taoiseach: Decision likely within weeks on new household charge

The Taoiseach has told struggling homeowners that they will "probably" know by the end of the month if they are to face a new household charge from next year.

Enda Kenny insisted there was no confusion in Government on the issue, and said the Cabinet would examine the proposal from the Environment Minister.

His comments came despite a statement from Minister Phil Hogan that the charge will be imposed from January.

A condition of the EU/IMF bailout deal is that water and property charges are imposed.

Enda Kenny said a decision would be quick and in line with the EU-IMF bailout deal.

"It will be decided, probably before the end of June, so that people will be aware well in advance what's involved here," he said.
