Obama may make speech on O'Connell Street

Speculation is mounting that US President Barack Obama may give a speech on O'Connell Street in Dublin during his visit to Ireland later this month.

The US President has previously spoken of his admiration for Irish political leader, Daniel O'Connell.

During his St Patrick's Day visit to the White House, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny presented Barack Obama with a book on O'Connell.

Author Patrick Geoghegan explains the link between Obama and O'Connell.

Mr Geoghegan said: "His great hero when he was young was Frederick Douglas, this former slave who turned himself into a great orator.

"Obama modelled his oratorical style on Douglas and what was fascinating then was that Douglas modelled his oratorical style on Daniel O'Connell."
