Man charged with murder of woman in Laois

A man has been charged with the murder of 30-year-old Diane Burroughs.

Jason Daly, aged 40, of PJ Delaney flats on Main St, Mountrath in Co. Laois appeared before a special sitting of Birr District Court this evening.

Ms. Burroughs' body was discovered at her flat on Main St, Mountrath on Saturday evening.

The mother of one, originally from Kildare town, is understood to have been strangled to death.

The court heard Daly was not working and in receipt of social welfare payments.

He was granted legal aid.

Judge Catherine Staines also ordered that the defendant receive psychiatric and medical treatment.

He was remanded in custody until Thursday when he will appear before Cloverhill District Court.
