Gardaí are hunting for an armed gang who stole a substantial sum of money from a Supervalu supermarket in north Dublin yesterday evening.

One man has been held in custody overnight in connection with the raid in Killester during which two men threatened staff with a handgun and a hammer before making off in a red Citroen Saxo, driven by a third man.

The vehicle was later found abandoned.

During follow up searches, officers arrested a 27-year-old man in the back garden of a house on Mask Crescent and held him overnight at Clontarf Garda Station.

No shots were fired during the robbery and investigating officers have since recovered all the stolen money.
