More than 30 people have been evacuated from their houses in Cork city overnight after a burst water mains sent tens of thousands of gallons of water flooding through their homes.

A mains pipe burst on Old Youghal Road at around 2.30am, resulting in water cascading down the Fever Hospital Steps near Murphy’s Brewery.

Four units of Cork City Fire Brigade responded and evacuated residents from Shandon Court and Shandon View Cottages which were flooded in the deluge.

One member of the HSE ambulance service was injured, after he was knocked over by the force of the torrent.
