Jury retires in Shane Geoghegan murder trial

The jury is out in the trial of a man accused of fatally shooting Limerick rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

Barry Doyle with addresses in Limerick and Portland Row, Dublin, denies murdering the 28-year-old on November 9, 2008 in an alleged case of mistaken identity.

Shane Geoghegan was shot dead in a suspected case of mistaken identity as he returned home to Clonmore after watching a rugby match with a friend.

Following his arrest in February 2009, Barry Doyle admitted firing twice at the 28-year-old's head having chased him into a back garden of the estate.

He would not say why.

In its final address to the jury, the prosecution drew attention to the details in Barry Doyle's confession and the fact it matched garda ballistics evidence.

In reply, the defence claim the accused was put under "unremitted psychological pressure" by gardaí and that they used threats and promises to secure a confession.

The jury has now begun its deliberations.
