Government approves €1m Japan aid for Red Cross

The Government has approved €1m for the Red Cross relief operation in Japan, it was announced today.

The Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore says the decision was made following an appeal from the Japanese Government for European Union assistance in responding to the earthquake and tsunami.

The money will be targeted at providing relief for people left injured or homeless by the disaster.

Meanwhile, Ireland's Ambassador to Japan and his staff at the Embassy say they have now accounted for all of the Irish citizens known to be living or working in the affected areas in Japan.
