There were no reports of any Irish casualties following the earthquake in Japan this evening, the Department of Foreign Affairs has stated.

Anyone concerned about family or friends are advised to contact the Department’s Crisis Centre at (01) 4180233.

Irish nationals in Japan should contact the Irish Embassy in Tokyo +81 332 630695.

The Department’s Consular Crisis Centre has dealt with more than 230 calls since 9am this morning and the Irish Embassy in Tokyo has been making contact with Irish nationals known to be in the affected area.

There are estimated 2,000 Irish nationals in Japan, the majority of whom reside in the greater Tokyo area.

Irish nationals have been advised to stay away from low-lying coastal areas and to follow the advice of the local authorities.
