Man questioned over horse fair shooting

Gardaí investigating a shooting incident at the Smithfield horse fair in Dublin are continuing to question a man in his 40s.

The man was arrested last night following yesterday morning's attack in which two men from Co Offaly were injured.

They were rushed to hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening,

Gardaí afterwards recovered what was described as a home-made shotgun.

The man is being detained at the Bridewell Garda station this morning.

Gardaí believe the incident is linked to an ongoing traveller feud.

Meanwhile the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) is calling for emergency legislation to end the Smithfield fair.

DSPCA spokesperson Orla Aungier said the organisation has repeatedly raised concerns about the fair.

"The Smithfield horse market is entirely unsuitable - its location is all wrong and it has descended into criminality," she said.

"We are desperately calling on Government to introduce emergency legislation to end this fair once and for all."
