M7 reopens but further fog forecast

The M7 motorway has re-opened at Portlaoise after this morning's series of crashes.

Two trucks were involved in a collision shortly after 8am with up to 20 cars then involved in subsequent collisions.

One of the lorry drivers had to be cut from his vehicle and is being treated at Portlaoise Hospital for minor injuries.

At least three others received medical attention at the scene.

Meanwhile with more dense fog expected this evening and overnight, road safety chiefs have warned of its inherent dangers.

“Dense fog seriously reduces your visibility and makes driving very dangerous," said Noel Brett of the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

"Our advice is to switch on headlights and fog lamps, reduce your speed and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front."

Met Éireann is forecasting widespread dense fog again this evening, overnight and tomorrow morning, especially across Leinster, Munster and east Connacht.
