The jury in the trial of a woman accused of murdering her husband and her former lover’s wife in 1991 will retire to consider its verdict today.

Hazel Stuart is accused of murdering 32-year-old police constable Trevor Buchanan and 31-year-old Lesley Howell in Derry.

Her former lover, Colin Howell, is serving a 21-year sentence after confessing to killing the pair with carbon monoxide fumes then staging their deaths to look like suicide.

Lawyers for the 48-year-old mother-of-two argued she had been under the influence of Mr Howell but prosecutors say there is overwhelming evidence that she planned the killings.

The jury is due to consider its verdict at Coleraine Crown Court this morning.
