Laois-Offaly count 'will finish tonight'

Returning officer for Laois-Offaly Verona Lambe has said that the count there will finish tonight, according to party agents and candidates that held a meeting with Ms Lambe this evening.

The group says there were 71 spoilt votes that have been taken out and have brought down the quota marginally. A decision was made on another five.

Some 31 votes for Independent candidate Fergus McDonnell were also discovered in bundles attributed to Fianna Fáil’s Sean Fleming.

The returning officer is expected to announce the 10th count at about 7.30pm, at which time Fine Gael’s Liam Quinn will be eliminated.
